Hand Crafted Candles
The Crystal Dragon hand makes several different types of candles, including paraffin, coconut, beeswax and our popular wax melts. All of our waxes are sourced carefully for the highest quality wax possible available in North America.
Paraffin Wax Candles
The paraffin wax available for candle making is made from a process that distills the wax from coal or oil shale mixed with stearic acid. It is a colourless, odourless, soft wax that burns clear with minimal soot. It has the most sensitive burn memory of all waxes on the market; although it's biggest drawback is it tends to burn quicker then other types of wax.
Paraffin wax is the easiest wax on the market to dye and scent. Since it is the most versatile wax available, candles can be found in many different moulded shapes, colours and scents.
The Crystal Dragon's paraffin wax candles are available in a wide selection of scents, colours and shapes. The most popular is the votive and pillar shapes. Also available in jars and moulded shapes.
Coconut Wax Candles
Our coconut wax is made with high quality coconut meat that is mixed with additional harder vegetable oils, such as soy, rape seed and even beeswax. Coconut wax burns the cleanest and slowest of all waxes with almost no smoke or soot.
Coconut wax has the best scent throw of any wax on the market and along with soy the least burn memory. It has been in use since the late 1800's with its popularity surging again the 1990's. It is considered the most Eco-friendly and sustainable man -made wax to make and burn.
It is available in containers in a variety of different colours and scents.
Paraffin Wax Melts
Wax melts are generally made from paraffin wax without any stearic acid and may even be softened further with either coconut or soy oil additives. Wax melts are generally safer to use then candles as there is no open flame and less smoke of soot, depending on the melter used.
Wax melts are available in a wide variety of scents and colours. Typically a wax melt square will last about 2 hours in an electric melter.
Beeswax Candles
The Crystal Dragon sources its beeswax from a local beekeeper with hives located all over Central and North Wellington County, Perth County and lower Grey County. Filtered three to fours times, the beeswax is purified on site and kept pure with no additional wax additives.
Beeswax is considered the only natural, sustainable and healthy wax to burn. Made from the caps of bee honeycombs, it is the longest burning, least smoke or soot producing wax with a natural sweet honey scent and creamy yellow colour. Not to mention they are drip-less when burned correctly.
In addition to burning with the brightest and purest light of any wax candle, beeswax candles also produces negative ions into the air when burned. It is these negative ions that help to neutralize foreign particles in the air, such as dust, mould and odours resulting in cleaner air that may reduce allergy and asthma symptoms.
The Crystal Dragon offers beeswax candles in hand-dipped tapers, moulded shapes and votives. We never add any scents the wax. While beeswax does not take additional colouring well, we do add colour to the wax to produce beautiful shades of reds. The addition of colour does not affect the health benefits of burning beeswax candles.
Candle Burn Memory
Every wax available for candle making has what is called a 'burn memory'. In order to maximize the wax and burn time of any candle is to let it burn right to its' edges. This will prevent the wick from tunnelling down into the candle and increase the amount of wax that is consumed. When a candle tunnels it will bun down quicker and not provide the advertised burn time from the manufacturer.
Candle Do's and Dont's!
- Do's
- Burn right to the candle edge for the first burn
- Keep the wick trimmed between burning
- Always use a holder, container, or plate to catch any dripping wax or spillover
- Use a long match or lighter
- Read and follow the manufacturer's use and safety instructions
- If burning more then one candle at a time keep candles at least 3 inches apart
- Always let the candle and container cool before moving to avoid burns and wax spillage
- Dont's
- Never leave a candle burn unattended
- Always place the candle out of reach of toddlers, children and pets to prevent accidental burns, spilled wax and fire.
- Do not burn candles where the flame is close to combustible items, like curtains or pillows, bedding or blankets
- Don't burn a candle right down to the bottom of the wick as the container may over heat
- Only use candles in a well-ventilated rooms
- Never use our fingers or water to extinguish the flame
- Never touch or move a lit candle
